Problem or Use Case

An additional feature that would be beneficial for our workflow is to allow a printer to be reserved to a specific user group (Admin or other).

Use cases:

  • Printer requires maintenance or calibration and needs to be taken out of rotation temporarily.
  • Project is underway that requires special buildplates, printer settings or filament for a short duration.

Proposed Solution

Allow a printer to be reserved to a specific user group (Admin or other). This would be allowed by a permission "Allow to Reserve Printer" per group and performed on the printer cards by selecting the group that is only allowed to print to it.

@maziggy commented on GitHub (Feb 5, 2026):

Some questions that came to my mind:

  • What happens to already-queued jobs when a printer gets reserved? Remain queued, or error?
  • Should there be a visual indicator on reserved printers (e.g., a badge or different color)?
  • Should this interact with manual printer selection? (User picks specific printer vs. auto-assignment)
  • Should admins always bypass reservations?
